Fuck this shit, Fuck Big Tech and fuck the rich.
The global elite have finally gone fully mask off.
wait until they finally feel it is okay to revisit implementing the webdrm proposal from two years ago, that would make adblockers and such irrelevant because the browser would check each webpage for “integrity” and if something changed the webpage’s prescribed layout it would be systemically blocked “for safety”.
The feedback to this proposal was harsh so they dropped it. Jk they just did it in a smaller way, applying it to android webview instead of chrome as a whole. this is a classic Google move; now they get telemetry on the webdrm for the eventual wider rollout, they’ve opened the concept up to the masses, and they can roll it out in small chunks so eventually one day we will be like oh shit, the browser that 70% of the world uses requires a cryptographic token verification for webpages to load to make sure I see the ads.
Ending sideloading is potentially a step towards this actually as it makes it more difficult to run any software that would bypass drm and makes webdrm systems stronger. They’re focusing on android because long term phone/tablets have been outpacing computers for internet browsing for years now. Computers are more difficult to manage and ultimately a dying market.
Ffuuuuuuuucccckkkk gooogle and all advertising firms. They are the instruments that perpetuate and drive the rot of capitalism. Destroy all advertisers
Destroy all advertisers
Embrace Bill Hicks Thought.
Heh…
pulls out katana.
The age of the linuxphone has begun.
backflips into a fedora laying on the ground.
And your little “silicon valley”?
slices google pixel in half.
Not up to snuff.
/unhex i swear to fucking god if they make me actually pay money to play balatro im going to fucking flip
Guess I’m finally going linux or dumbphone.
If you work on this: fuck you
Didn’t the EU just finish telling Apple they have to open up their ecosystem? And now Google’s like “Wait Apple had a great idea”
EU is implementing a surveillance state so Google saw the chance
Do we think they’re gonna suddenly flip on the court decision they made like a year ago though? That seems like a strange bet. They just made this decision
But have you considered
Why are we linking Reddit when dbzero will do?
More Lemmy users need to know about this new underdog called Reddit.
It doesn’t matter, reddit and dbzero are all liberals?
You forgetting someone?
So this obviously impacts things like FDroid, doesn’t it? I would say most of the apps I use on my phone come from FDroid.
It impacts every single app that Google does not like.
Cos deep down we’re redditors still
This hurts
Good human
I wonder they’re doing this (in part, also just general control) to avoid apps like Revanced eating up their precious ad money.
And the firewall apps that are doing the same
huawei os phone it is
Isn’t that even more locked down?
HarmonyOS has an open source version as well and aren’t an evil entity trying to take over the global internet. https://openharmony.cn/
I mean, if it works I’m for it. I fucking hate android tbh.
I wish I could just have a phone with debian or something.
Funnily enough there is a Debian derivative for phones. However it only supports the devices listed here, pretty much the same as other mobile distros like postmarketOS and Ubuntu touch.
Yeah, I actually have one with postmarketos and it’s fun but still so many features are missing and the battery drains sooo fast lol
Is there a Huawei with open harmony by default, or do I have to do the install myself?
You’d have to do the install yourself and buy direct from Huawei. I don’t know if Huawei still provides OEM unlock codes, but as of 2018 they were charging $60 for the code.
IDK maybe, but will it literally be 0% of phone manufacturers that deviate away from Google on this to get an extra bullet point on their feature list?
Yeah but it’s China
Ok, I’ve had enough shady experience with Chinese software as well, have you ever tried unlocking a bootloader for xiaomi? It used to be easy as pie, now it’s the most frustrating process ever.
I tried it with a huawei way back, it was frustrating back then.
Tech is a such a distraction. Wish Google did this ten years ago.
I love frothing mfs in that and other threads being like that’s it imma buy iphone. Nah fuck that.
This shit has been a thing for a while. Whatever. I will find a way.
Installing a ROM rather than the stock OS will still work, this update will likely affect even older stock OSes if it’s pushed out as part of Google Play Services.
If push came to shove I got to find a ROM. But even that depends on whether a device is supported or not. And then there’s still issues with bank apps.
If its play services then breaking it with some debloater or some shit with shizuku will be a path.
self-own
Do we have an effort post about escaping into second line phone tech?
what does that mean? I’m reading that it means “transfering files between devices”, WHAT? So I wouldn’t be able to drag and drop shit from my pc to my phone trhough usb?
It means you won’t be able to download and install apps from anywhere besides the Google Play Store unless the developer of said app has formally verified themselves with Google.
I’m a dumbass, can someone tell me what this means? No third-party/unsanctioned apps?
No unsanctioned apps. No unapproved .apks
It means some non play store apps will need a lot more hassle to install
I wonder if this will fuck GraphineOS?
Its only for first party android distributions but google is fastracking killing custom roms anyway as well as manufacturers removing the ability to root devices so… Hurray
Arrrgh I hate
Join me in the revolution of turning a steam deck into a phone.
Please tell me that’s a real thing it would be so funny
I found this
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
God can you imagine whipping that thing out to talk on it. Like having a proper phone call on an iPad.
Valve appear to be testing ARM64 and Android support for Steam on Linux
Valve has been working on support for ARM64 Linux, potentially for the standalone VR headset, Deckard, which might be a Valve smartphone. With this news, though, I wonder how this is going to impact this project and projects like Waydroid that Valve was integrating.
