I remember that a few eyars ago Palestine finally outlawed marrying the underage. Reddit had some real nasty things to say about Palestinians for not outlawing it for so long. My comment reminded them that in the majority of states marriage of 15 year olds is permissible and in 4 states THERE IS NO MINIMUM AGE FOR MARRIAGE. It did not get many upvotes.

Well jesus christ. I was a teen in the 90s and I “dated” older guys. Because I was severely bullied by my peers, my family did not give a single fuck and I definitely wasn’t ok. It ended when I gotremovedd by a 40 year old man at age 16 and I was traumatized for life by all of it.

And yes, it was sadly more common at the time. It doesn’t mean it was ok.

The rules about age were hazier back in the day but a guy picking up high schoolers after high school has been a loser signifier for a long time. It’s a pop culture thing It’s such a prevalent sentiment. It happens of course but it’s not socially celebrated. No television sitcom in the last 50 years would have a teenage girl start dating an older man and have it not be part of a “Very Special Episode” about predation or drugs or just listening to your parents.

It’s still such a common trope it hurts too. Losers going to high school football games to prey on literal children. Or they meet them at their jobs.

Now they supply their underaged girlfriends weed and xanax or oxycodone.

Bottom of the barrel human beings

My sister was in her teens in the 90s and I remember my dad threatening dudes with prison if he ever saw them near her again. It definitely was NOT a normal and ok thing back then.

my first shit job as 15 year old was at the mall. the security guards in their 30s would hit on the 15 year old girls. we all knew they were creeps.

hell, we thought it was kinda weird when a senior was hooking up with a freshman.

she just dumped so much trauma like that’s all completely normal and universal. yeah i really don’t think it’s that common for 15yr old girls to go around fucking 40 year old men. that seems like something a child who should have been in therapy would have been doing due to neglect. and obviously not to mention the 40 year old is a pedophile. it’s not normal to just be a pedophile.

there’s a hard cutoff line when something goes from being a horrible crime to something normal and fine but it’s not 18, you idiots, it’s actually 12 smuglord

I have a harder time framing her a monster than other prominent male defenders of Epstein because she seems like she’s trying to normalize her own abuse. I suppose hurt people hurt people but people hurt by hurt people aren’t less hurt because they were hurt by hurt people.

    • Hurt people hurt people is the only reasoning or understanding that I’ve managed to come up as an explanation of why so many of us who were teens in the 90s had shit like this happen to us and why we just got told it was normal or if we got hurt, that it was our fault.

The fucked up way young girls especially were treated like adults in some ways and not others is very 90s.

But then I also know we all lived through it, had kids of our own. And having witnessed one whole human grow from a baby to an adult and seen how a kid at 13-18 is still just such a child I cannot understand how anyone (especially a parent) could ever let a grown ass man near a literal child. If I even think about it in relation to my own kid (or any kid) it makes me feel physically sick.

And then I compare that to the non-reaction of the generations past and although the “hurt people hurt people” probably explains some of it, they are also shit people for letting these things happen and become normalized. Every adult in a girls life who has had to go through SA and who makes them feel like it was their fault or was ok should get wall.

    • Yeah, I am roughly the same age, and had a classmate get into a relationship with a ~30 year old guy at age 16 in the rural midwest. It was not accepted, and she had to hide it from her family and friends. It was found out after the fact and that guy got his ass beat by adult family members and a restraining order filed. It absolutely didn’t just start being thought unacceptable in the 90s/2000s.

When I was in highschool (2010s) there were a few girls that were like her, but it was definitely not the norm.

Grown men should not be picking up their teenage girlfriends from school. I’m definitely not trying to make a blanket statement but it was usually vulnerable girls who had uninvolved parents.

These men should be ostracized for this shit but society loves blaming the CHILDREN for getting into these relationships instead.

Obviously a lot going on that people here and on Bluesky have discussed. But if you cut everything but the first line it’s a pretty true and funny roast of the USA and the West in General

Ok in Donald Trump’s defense - fucking 14 year old girls was really only made a social taboo in the 1990’s.

    Like Polanski etc,

It was definitely not normal at all. My sets of grandparents were born 3 and 5 years apart (in the latter case, they didn’t meet until they were in their 30s.) My parents have a 3 year age gap. My acquaintances’ families are usually within the same ballpark.
