wasn’t there some rts game like 10 15 years ago - world of heroes? heroes of war? blood of heroes? - where the first game had the classic western allies vs wehrmacht in normandy, which is all fine, and then the sequel did the eastern front. now of course they depicted the germans as “misguided but still classy and cool” and the soviets as “technically on the right side but actually evil” including enemy at the gates BS like evil commissars forcing poor soldiers to fight or die (because the average soviet citizen would rather be invaded and genocided than fighting against the noble europeans)

I think it was Company of Heroes 2. The whole burger brained plot was told through an interrogation in a gulag and the main narrator wanted to defect if I’m remembering right.

Fucking Company of Heroes 2, and it chaps my ass to this day because mechanically it’s a great RTS but holy shit they couldn’t possibly conceive of portraying the Soviets as just clear-cut heroes for fighting the Nazis, as implied by the title. Ofc the devs are Canadians.

oh damn, is there like a subplot about how the Soviets (all ethnically russians) were owned by some epic ukrainians (who just happened to be allied to the germans don’t worry about it they were just fighting for their free nation or something)?

Nah, but your Soviet commanding officer does betray and murder some Polish partisans, in the cut-scene after the mission where you help them out.
