McConnellRet was Asmongold’s sidekick in classic wow 2019-2020 era. He was like a court jester type personality. Asmongold isn’t really good at WoW, he’s just overly confident and his viewers give him stuff for free.

So the way vanilla wow works is that you have to make a team of 40 people to kill like 10 bosses once per week. Your character gets locked to the raid instance so you can only kill them once per week. Your team is called a guild. Each boss might drop like 2-6 items each week, so like 40 items have to get divided up among 40 players. Some of the items won’t even be usable by anyone. Each player is lucky to get 1 gear piece per week.

Many guilds distribute loot through Loot Council, which means that the leaders of the guild give the items to whoever they want. In theory, a good Loot Council will give the best gear to the best (and most loyal) players of the guild. If a player leaves the guild or stops attending raids, then the guild’s progression is hurt. The goal is to have a well geared team. Also if a certain player is performing badly, they may be benched.

So Asmongold plays a Warrior, the lore of a warrior matches his arrogance, ie violent and not smart. Warriors was a top damage dealing class in Vanilla. Asmongold is not a very good player though.

McConnell plays a Retribution Paladin. In WoW, paladin is a utility class, it gives a bunch of bonuses to the party/raid. Paladin can be tank, damage, or healer role. Retribution Paladin is a damage role. Since Paladin gives a bunch of bonuses to the party, the developers have typically decided to make Paladin have less damage than other damage classes. However in vanilla wow (and tbc), there was an unintended mechanic with Ret Paladin called Seal Twisting to deal a lot of damage, but you have to use addons to press buttons at specific timings. So most guilds hated Ret Paladin because many players didn’t know how to Seal Twist.

Asmongold was the guild leader and raid leader. There was like at least 1000 people who wanted to join his guild. His guild had like a dozen different raid teams, I’m not sure if any of them were good. One of the raid teams even got hijacked by a nazi-type guy who was shouting slurs.

So Asmongold was in charge of all the loot. McConnell was Asmongold’s Yes-Man. Asmongold wanted the best melee items for himself. McConnell wanted the best melee items for himself. People say Asmongold doesn’t deserve the loot first because he’s arrogant and not very good. People say that McConnell doesn’t deserve the loot because they hate Ret Paladin. They would argue about who gets gear.

It’s so funny to me how this guy really always did suck at the game that “made him”. When I was still raiding actively in WoW up until 2020 or so you could not escape discourse about him, but it was mostly about how bad a player he is.

I remember that it was mostly the casual HC guilds and old warriors and tanks in those who would bring his takes up. Like real life older dudes. In the mythic raiding area the guy never came up apart from being considered a joke. His clout mostly comes from being a clown of sorts I think.

Normies: “actually, rude is the real polite. I like Asmongold, he’s mean and that means he’s good!”

Also normies: “WHAT, the local jackass did his jackass act to ME?!?”

Why are you complaining, asshole? To normies, being an asshole is just basic courtesy.
