Accepting fascism as a force which is currently/ recently existing and understanding its dynamics in those terms make it much more understandable and squares it up with the actual problems that we confront today. I think the biggest strength of this analysis is that: it is entirely relevant to current contradictions which isn’t true of most other definitions

Defense mechanism isn’t entirely inaccurate, but it puts the cause at opposition to capitalism instead of internal to capitalism’s need to expropriate
