It’s hard to imagine a person who thinks any vietnam vet is worth defending. The only good vietnam vets are the ones who feel so ashamed about it they don’t want to tell people they were even there.

I’ll give a bit of leeway cause of the whole conscription thing, if I got drafted into an imperial bloodbath fresh from high school and lacked the wherewithal to avoid it or frag a CO at the time then I would for sure spend the rest of my life fucking pissed off about it and am for sure cynical enough to use troop worship to my advantage. This is maybe like 1/40 or so surviving vets but im sure thar number is higher in Vietnam vets who go to protests still. Closer to 1/20 when factoring the ones who decided everything was Nixon’s fault personaly which is sizeable. Being mad at the right thing for the wrong reason isn’t the worst thing ever either if it may lead to an advantageous outcome, which in this case it probably won’t but also most likely won’t lead to anytjing worse. I guess if anything it signals to others around who may be more on the ball that America has always been like this. It’s not much leeway, but ill allow a biiiiit here

Yeah nobody ever talks about it but the Vietnam war was basically ended by the troops. I really need to learn more about this, but there were Navy ships rapidly starting to unionize, and the Army literally had to phase out grenades as a weapon. I think fragging was bigger than the already staggering official numbers. I really think Nixon thought the US was at risk of fully collapsing if he didn’t get out of Vietnam. The United States LOST lost that war. LOST it. We didn’t let shit slide, didn’t back out gracefully because we were bored. We would have actually not survived as a nation if we tried to win that war.

I see proud Vietnam veterans driving around all the time- there are plenty of fucking racist freaks who are mad it ended. And more people full of self-pity without a concern for their actual victims. But that war sure had a lot of interesting shit happening.

If I’m coming out of high school and thrust into a horrible position like that without ever being able to google ‘surplus labor value’ and only knowing politics because of a textbook maybe I can divine theory out of thin air. Because obviously this sucks and maybe I’m confused about why someone would even bother. I would have certainly depended on the guidance of someone more knowledgeable than me to ever find it in myself to do anything besides what I’m told or folding under pressure. I propose there’s not much use in pontificating how I could point a finger at an 18 year old and say they fucked up in their decision making because they didn’t get much agency or expression in the chaos, the force of empire, their hormones, and their soup for brains. I think the more interesting thing is to contemplate how important it is that a charismatic leftist is there when push comes to shove to show that there is an option besides barbarism.
