I was told that it may lead to easier or faster release, and I imagine I might be targeted to be imprisoned if I push it if I don’t bring an ID, but I feel like that’s bullshit but I don’t think I should leave it to chance

    If you’ve ever been fingerprinted in the country that you live in, there’s a pretty good chance that if you are arrested and “booked” by police they can confidently identify you without a photo ID.

    But yeah, this will be specific to your location, the size of the protest, the type of police/state presence, and how long you want your presence to be a pain in the ass of whatever agency arrests you (if that happens).
