In this thread.

I hate talking to American boots, it’s the intersection between “what we did was good” and “I’m not guilty for what we did”. Stop being fucking proud of participating in the war crime machine.

Maybe someone with more patience than me can explain to this person why it’s actually bad that they served in the international murder and oppression force. If you reply to them, please keep in mind that this person is still a human being, even if they’re extremely propagandized and wrong. I don’t think bullying is going to accomplish anything here.

NOTE: IF YOU POST IN THE LINKED THREAD, RESPECT THE INSTANCE RULES AND BE CIVIL. Let’s not make a mess in federated communities for no reason. midwest.social is a leftist instance as well.

This is the actual motivation for people to cling to the “clean wehrmacht” myth, not wanting to consider themselves or their family or friends complicit in the violence they carried out with their own hands

I deserve discounts and my ass should be kissed for my “service”, but I definitely don’t want any of the blame

I think that the “good” ethically that they are speaking to is the idea that beyond contemporary American fascist/imperialist nationalism a person willing to sacrifice a portion of their lives to serve the republic is what is called a “good”.

When Athenians fought the Spartans in the Peloponnesian War neither side had a particular righteous stance but standing up for their city was considered a good.

Now we have to face the fact that our leaders no longer even pretend to do things for the good. And boots are arguing for a “good” beyond the scope of that.

And honestly you should let them have that sense of participating in the good for the realm of glory. I understand that struggle because I feel very disjointed about Vietnam vets. I struggle with that part of US history and those that participated in it a bunch.

So I get it. But I have tried to make space for these people that tried to do that right thing that history told them was the right thing. Sometimes you have to let the wookie win.

I understand what you’re saying, but this also excuses German nazi soldiers. American soldiers should be ashamed. Everyone knows what the US military does, it’s not a secret.

Yup. Let’s get this straight about England’s problem with the NAZIs: NAZIs think that colonialism need not only been done at a distance. NAZIs will colonize their own people. The civilized British would only colonize at a distance. At least since the 16th century. So the moral compasses of the West are still bent around treating other sovereign nations as resources.

        hegemon gonna hegemon.

So I agree NAZIs make every argument worse … the dudes in the Wehrmacht loved their country as much as these people love the USA. And I have no solutions.

Regardless of what copes and delusions and propaganda there is about “serving the Republic”, the truth of the matter is that they have served a slave owning genocidal empire in an effort to destroy foreign lands for profit based on a rotten white supremacist ideology. This is the truth. They have helped kill millions of human beings and ruin the lives of everyone left alive. Genocide is still genocide. The victims deserve justice and to have their humanity respected. A part of this is to acknowledge the evil of the perpetrators and not make excuses for genocidal terror.
