For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Manoel’s Destinies (1984), a Portuguese/French surreal fantasy consisting of three 50-minute fairy-tale style stories, each centering on the strange adventures of a six-year-old Portuguese boy as he meets his future self, swaps bodies at the behest of an evil magician, and learns how to fly, among other things. Director is renowned Chilean auteur Raul Ruiz, who specializes in this kind of dreamlike fantasy; this is considered one of his best works. This was a holy grail of rare films for a long time until it suddenly resurfaced on the internet a few years ago. The French dub is the only version in circulation, so that is the version we will watch. Currently the highest-rated Portuguese film on Letterboxd.

After that is Halloween (1978), John Carpenter’s genre-codifying slasher, which probably needs no introduction, but I’ll introduce it anyway: homicidal maniac Michael Myers escapes from the local mental hospital, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) chases after him while hyping up his evilness to everyone who will listen, and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) just wants to babysit and not be caught up in all this horror stuff. Usually still considered one of the best slashers ever made. I intend to show Halloween 2 (1981) and Halloween 3 (1982) over the next week, also.
