Urrrraaaaagh the fucking fish department at Walmart was an abomination! They were somehow less knowledgeable and more poorly organized than the big box pet store fish departments! They stopped selling those “cute” goldfish because it was cruel to sell people a 5 gallon fish tank to house something that needs more like 40+ gallons!
It was cruel, but I doubt that’s why Walmart stopped doing it. More likely they got an unprofitable rate of returns
it blew my kid mind when i learned that goldfish are basically the same thing as koi, just treated so badly that they can’t grow
Worse is when people keep goldfish in tiny glass betta bowls, which are way too small even for bettas. Then they wonder why their fish died a week later.
