The pollution one blows my mind. Not only is it lower per capita than basically every western nation, but it also includes the pollution from the manufacture of pretty much everything the West uses. The cherry on top being that China is the only developed nation making a serious attempt to transition to green energy.

They saw one news piece about grey skies in the leadup to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and have just assumed that nothing has changed since then, perhaps because living in the U.S. in the last seventeen years has convinced them that better things aren’t possible and that no one will ever do anything about serious problems.

They honestly seem to think that “Chinese brainwashing propaganda” is a real thing, like a cognitohazard, just being exposed to it is enough to make someone like China. Which is true, I guess, but they seem to think it is a magical capability of “Chinese propaganda” that does it, not the actual content of the videos.
If I were to make up a story about this lib, I’d say this is a guy who routinely makes racists jokes and complaints about the Chinese, and recently has noticed a lot more pushback for it. And they’re concerned that they might be a racist, but they aren’t! They’re a good person which means that something insidious is going on, their friends, family and coworkers refusing to tolerate their racist jokes anymore is proof of a big Chinese conspiracy to brainwash people.
