my guess is no small amount of the people who are into joining the gestapo are too economically comfortable to want to do the work or maybe have characteristics/history that disqualify/dissuade them from federal jobs. the application process to get into the federal job system is very bureaucratic, lengthy, and documentation heavy. it’s something appointed people get to bypass.

it’s also one of the reasons that it’s rough to have a mass exodus of federal workers, because hiring back to capacity, even if the desire is there, is not something that happens quickly.

as big as it is, the federal system is frankly more set up to quickly contract out work than it is to add people.
