This is the first time I can remember the previous console getting more expensive when the next console releases.
I got my GameCube for $50 when the wii came out
GameCube is a pretty extreme case. They were practically giving them away once the wii hit big. Going up is insane.
Did this happen with the NES when super NES came out? That’s the only real comparison I can think of with Nintendo having back to back successful consoles.
Nope. Parents were new to the idea of upgrading a console in the first place and they focused most of their non-child advertising in telling parents there is a genuine difference even if they already have a Nintendo Machine. Genesis had also come out 2 years earlier and NES prices dropped to compete in the meantime.
It wasn’t a different console entirely, but the original PS5 got more expensive when the subsequently released PS5 slim came out. Unlike PS4 where both original and slim versions got cheaper when the PS4 slim released. PS5 pro is an additional $200 more than the slim (a $700 console).
Yeah but the GameCube didn’t sell well like the switch has. The Wii releasing massively lowered demand, whereas the switch 2 probably had little effect on switch sales
