Abusing semantics and quote mining does not make one right. The proletariat does not “seize power” over the course of decades or centuries. Socialism is some assumed via revolution, and not something which is “grown into”. To say otherwise is literal Kautskyism and contradicts the entire understanding of dialectical and historical materialism.
In a demagogic way, Mao Zedong and the Communist Party of China have subordinated all their declarations about the construction of the socialist and communist society to their pragmatic policy. Thus, in the years of the so-called great leap forward, with the aim of throwing dust in the eyes of the masses, who, emerging from the revolution, aspired to socialism, they declared that within 2-3 five-year periods, they would pass directly over to communism. Later, however, in order to cover up their failures, they began to theorize that the construction and triumph of socialism would require ten thousand years.
I am in a tactical alliance with Saul Wenger in which we both read each other’s works and spread them around. I do not agree with Maoism, but I understand that there is common ground between me and Wenger that we can both work on. But do they (at least before Trump) still allow bourgeois democratic liberties? Do they still allow voting, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. (even if all of these are ineffective)? If so, then there still a mask to hid the true character of American capitalism.
Poverty elimination to itself is not inherently socialist. For instance, poverty elimination has been nominally conducted under social democratic states in the past via using the spoils of imperialism to create a labor aristocracy. What matters is China has no intent on ever abolishing private property and thus cannot be considered socialist.
