As always, we ask that in order to participate in the weekly megathread, one self-identifies as some form of disabled, which is broadly defined in the community sidebar:
“Disability” is an umbrella term which encompasses physical disabilities, emotional/psychiatric disabilities, neurodivergence, intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities, invisible disabilities, and more. You do not have to have an official diagnosis to consider yourself disabled.
Mask up, love one another, and stay alive for one more week.
anti-homeless sentiment
We have a local city official who accused a homeless man of being too privileged to be homeless and suggested using city resources to rob him and destroy his possessions once a day until he leaves. This person is a Democrat and a board member on a local social service agency that deals with homeless people regularly.
ableist/eugenics rhetoric
In response to this issue, the comments had people suggesting and agreeing that we should reopen “insane asylums” and institutionalize all homeless people. How long until the ugly laws come back? How long until conservatorships are required for anyone the state deems undesirable? How long until they start declaring all homeless people gang members and shipping them off to CECOT? This shit’s got me dooming hard
Our hospitals are bad enough now, I don’t even want to think about what it would be like if we “retvrn”. And on top of that, sending in people who don’t need medical treatment, but instead need supportive safety nets is appalling. Wish people were just normal about disabled and poor people. Or even people who just choose to be homeless. I don’t know that there’s a lot of them besides travel bloggers, but still.
