The Poor People’s Campaign was a march on Washington D.C. to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States that began on this day in 1968, just one month after the assassination of one of its key organizers, MLK Jr.

The protest was also organized by Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and carried out under the leadership of Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King’s assassination.

After presenting an organized set of demands to Congress and executive agencies, participants set up a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall, where they stayed for six weeks in the spring of 1968.

Among those demands was a proposal for an “economic bill of rights” that included a commitment to full employment, a guaranteed annual income measure, and more low-income housing for poor Americans of all races.

"I think it is necessary for us to realize that we have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights…

When we see that there must be a radical redistribution of economic and political power, then we see that for the last twelve years we have been in a reform movement…

That after Selma and the Voting Rights Bill, we moved into a new era, which must be an era of revolution…"

-MLK Jr., in a 1967 planning meeting

“Lol, we don’t really read resumes. Never your’s especially! It’s just toooo hard!”

Oh my God, can corpos stop pretending their gross and utter incompetence is cute and quirky? Gen Z can’t start their lives because we’re all forced to wait in line for porky to eventually decide to get off his lazy butt and maybe consider hiring.

Oh noes, someone dropped Western chauvinism in my local activist movement. I don’t get how supposed anticapitalists still believe in so called ‘Western values’.

They must not have a space like hexbear to deprogram them. Joining hexbear was great for my political development. Before I only read the news from Western mainstream media and hexbear basically showed me a lot of things that were omitted in the stories from these media.

Had a comment removed on a federated comm (for “fascist Russian propaganda”) because I said that Ukrainians want peace and should have their voices heard by holding elections once again. shrug-outta-hecks

Need him back on screen post-Empire where he just goes “back in the good old days” yapping to passengers. Most realistic/grounded character in Star War.

Yes, and one of the ways his brother realized it was him was because the phrase “eat your cake and have it too” was used in the Unabomber writings. Teddy K apparently made a point of saying it with that order instead of the usual way because the expression actually makes sense that way, but it’s pretty unusual and helped the brother connect the dots.

In the new Superman trailer, Superman is getting interviewed and the interviewer is like “sure you stopped a war, but did you ever stop and think that it was illegal for you to enter that country” smuglord

Feels like it’s critiquing libs but from the fascist point of view. I haven’t watched any new superhero slop since the batman and looks like that shall continue

I think its just lois lane giving him a hard time so he would be ready for the US gov people angry at him. I feel the trailer was showing him on the right but the world is against him

But i could be wrong, it wouldnt be the first time superman gets used to push reactionary propaganda

Visited my grandma today and accompanied her to a meetup for elderly people organized by the local church, because my grandma was too anxious to go by herself. Since my grandpa died 6 months ago she’s been pretty isolated so we convinced her she needed to get out and meet new people. That all went pretty well, the people were super nice, my grandma immediately started chatting with some of the other women there and she seems pretty excited to go again.

But hoo boy, those old ladies were intense about their board games. Like, they were patient with my grandma and helped her out when she didn’t know the rules, but they were so fast?? I was 50 years younger than everyone else at the table but I struggled to keep up wtf.

How do people feel about Constantine? Specifically the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves, that is. My understanding is that critics at the time didn’t like it, but I’m a big fan. I will admit I’ve never read the comics, nor have I ever watched the Constantine TV show or The Sandman. But on its own merits I think it’s a very strong performance from Reeves - or at the very least it’s a role well-suited to him - and an underrated gem of his career.

    Andor spoilers, relationship violence,

Okay so everyone made a big deal about that scene in Andor where Syril abuses Deedra, but like… she is killing a planet and gaslighting him, and he chokes her. I don’t want to minimize relationship violence, but she has a body count larger than Hitler at this point and she has been lying to him for their entire relationship and she orders his arrest and firing upon a crowd she knows he’s in. How the hell is the shocking bit his choking. Obviously that’s bad, but he just found out she ordered genocide. Maybe I’m not neurotypical enough for this, but I think people are doing that thing where we act like direct acts that violate social norms are in a totally different and worse category than objectively more harmful acts that fit within societal norms and expectations.
