“Two people were arrested soon after the shooting, but were later released.[52] One was a libertarian conservative who was arrested on campus grounds after claiming to have shot Kirk.[53] He later told police he “was glad he said he shot the individual so the real suspect could get away”.[54] He reportedly had a history of mental health issues and was known to Utah authorities for his habit of disrupting public events.[53] He was taken to a hospital.[54] After his release on September 14, he was admitted into jail for obstruction of justice; after police discovered over 20 images of child sexual abuse on his phone, he was also charged with sexual exploitation of minors. On December 17, the man waived his right to a preliminary hearing.[55]”
