I read somewhere in a book about the third Reich how, during the early days of Nazi rule, confused liberal lawyers and bureaucrats would be completely perplexed about what was happening and would to things like knocking on the door of concentration camps to to say things like “But you can’t lock so and so up. That’s illegal!”, only to be told by guards to fuck off.
Their insistence on liberal niceties was completely inconsequential, of course.
