All arms of US law enforcement do heinous shit but most of them are also complex bureaucracies with departments within departments that do pretty mundane crap. The FBI probably has tons of people who just deal with like mail fraud or whatever and don’t even work in the same building as the Fred Hampton assassination squad (edit: mind you I’m not saying that makes working for the FBI okay, even if you are in the mail fraud team. Just that agencies like the FBI serve an actual civic function besides just brutalizing people, thought they do brutalize people quite often). ICE’s massive budget bump and recruitment campaign is clearly just a means of enlisting a bunch of MAGA wannabe-operator LARPers into ham fisted violence squad.
Technically that was the Chicago PD at behest of the FBI at behest of Hoover. I know, I know, “just following orders” is still hitlerite shit but it’s important to understand the bureaucracy.
Chicago PD already had a history of murdering Panther members so I doubt they needed much goading.
