it’ll have to hit Nov 5th-6th to tie the record for longest shutdown.
its hilarious how consistent republicans are at staying on message that somehow the minority-opposition party is causing this, even though Republicans could rewrite the rules for a vote and pass something right now if they could all agree with a few line items of their own project.
i think there’s just enough GOP who are legit worried about the ACA subsidies sunsetting alongside their careers (combined with absolute cranks) that they can’t wrangle themselves out of this mess. they probably expected the federal workers (who seem to have entered “fuck it” territory after the gutting this year) to pressure the dems more and bail the majority out by funding the government without condition. the scrambling uncertainty for troop pay is something I never thought id see in my lifetime. how many Mustangs are gonna get repo’d that weekend?
this probably never would have come about but for the perfect constellation of DOGE cuts rapidly burning out the federal workforce months ago, trumpist unitary executive overdrive streamrolling the backroom machines, and general congressional snivelry.
i keep waking up expecting some dems to have caved for a quick CR, but they seem contented to let trump eat it for now. most polls still show americans generally accept trump and the GOP are running the show, so they can’t quite manage to shake the stink of this.
