The American Academy of Pediatrics pushed it as a blanket recommendation back in the 70s and didn’t retract it until like the 2010s, which is why it’s so widespread. IIRC, the rationale was some hand-wavey bullshit about cleanliness and reducing the spread of STDs later in life, which is the exact kind of thing someone raised on leaded hose water would come up with.

I was told it was because when I exposed my penis to all my classmates in the changing room I wouldn’t be the only one who had an uncut wang and suffer humiliation. Turns out I never once got naked in front of my classmates, but I still got humiliated on a near constant basis. By a cruel twist of fate, had I actually had the opportunity to expose my gennies, I would have certainly earned myself some cred, as I’m hogged up for real down there.

I actually didn’t get snipped until I was in first grade due to getting repeat infections in the area (most likely due to my eczema). It sucks but what can you do, it kept me out of the hospital. I would never do it to my hypothetical child unless absolutely necessary.
