The world is more divided than ever, but there’s still something (nearly) everyone agrees on: The U.S. is unloved.

https://www.politico.eu/article/usa-popularity-collapse-worldwide-trump-return/

The United States is becoming less popular globally in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s return to the White House, according to new data.

The 2025 Democracy Perception Index summarizes attitudes toward democracy, geopolitics and global power players, and canvassed more than 110,000 respondents across 100 countries.

A majority of people surveyed had an overall negative perception of the U.S., marking a steep decline from last year. America’s reputation took a particularly massive hit in EU countries — perhaps unsurprisingly, as U.S. President Donald Trump has called the bloc “horrible,” “pathetic” and “formed to screw the United States.”

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former NATO chief and founder of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation that coauthored the index, said he was “not surprised that perceptions of the United States have fallen so sharply.”

Meanwhile, China kept improving its global standing, overtaking the U.S. for the first time and recording mostly positive perceptions in all regions except Europe. Russia, the reputation of which tanked in the wake of President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, is still (slightly) more unpopular than the U.S. — though its image is also improving.

Trump’s reputation is in line with that of his country. The survey showed he’s less popular worldwide than his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Putin and Xi Jinping.

Trump recorded the worst score among a range of political, cultural and spiritual leaders that includes X owner Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the late Pope Francis, Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian.

Israel emerged as the country with the worst global reputation of those included in the poll, especially in the Middle East and South Asia. Israel is unpopular even in European countries that have historically been its allies, such as Germany, signaling growing discomfort with its government’s conduct in Gaza and the West Bank.

Last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes.

The data used in this story came from an online survey conducted by Nira Data and the Alliance of Democracies between April 9-23, 2025. The sample was 111,273 drawn across 100 countries, with an average sample size of around 1,100 respondents per country. Nationally representative results were calculated based on the official distribution of age and gender for each country’s population.

    Biggest surprises:

    • Western Europe being kinda based for the first time ever.
    • Brazil being lamer than I expected.
    • Vietnam still being saltier towards China than the US.

This doesn’t even include Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Russia, AES, Cuba, DPRK, or Lao. And we’ve had a few decade weeks in the four months since this was taken. Really interested in seeing the next one.

this is probably data that’s at least a month old, I bet, because public perception of the US has taken a nosedive these past few weeks, on account of the tariff kerfuffle… I think the only people who still have a positive perception of the US is the pro-Bolsonaro lunatics who took to the streets yesterday with US and israel flags:

    “Alleged”

I don’t think you need to hedge on this one, I think the United Nations and International Criminal Court will back you if you leave off the “alleged”

China needs to repair relations with Vietnam. One of the greatest tragedies is their continued rocky relationship.

I’m American and don’t keep up with modern developments, but its wild to me to think that they’ve forgiven us to the point of disliking China more. We coated them with bombs and agent orange. Half our congress should have been nuremburg’ed just for Vietnam. Really sad to me, just like former USSR-China relations.

I’m currently in Poland I’ve seen multiple “fuck Putin, fuck trump” signs. I haven’t talked to a lot of locals yet but the ones i have certainly have no love for him. But I’m in Krakow not the small towns so it might be vastly different there.

Eh a few signs and not much else. If you really want to feel doomerish look for photos from anit-migrant demonstrations hosted by Konfederacja on the 19th of July. And the contra-demonstrations didn’t look to good either, shit’s bleak man. And still despite a lot of people hating Trump, overall they still believe in the USA and “what it stands for” or whatever the fuck. Everything single prof at my university is glazing the US like they’re getting paychecks straight from USAID.

Kraków doesnt count. Using Kraków as a metric to extrapolate what the average pole thinks is as a flawed as using berlin for the germans. There are a lot of people in the polish establishment that hope the us will gift them a PLC-reborn empire and turn them richer than the west. Some even think that being pro-west is “a magic trick” to make your country instantly rich.

India and Brazil still having more positive views of the US than China is disappointing, but I wonder if Trump turning his trade war on them will shift those numbers a bit.

brazil was showered with us exceptionalist propaganda for a good several decades there. we have an army of older people who simp for them.

i wonder when exactly these polls were conducted though, because the recent shenanigans with trump hurt their popularity quite a bunch for everyone who isn’t fascist here.

Meh that is just usual compradorism, speaking on behalf of the latin american bourgeoisie, i understand why they prefer the US, it do be as simple as that’s the place where they have properties and investments. For example, you won’t find a single mexican petty or more bourgeois with a house in shanghai, but almost everyone will have a house/condo/apartment in the bay area or smt with a respective bank account in US banks. The US will always be viewed favorably by the bourgeoisie and petty bourgeoisie of latin america due these links. You will see them flip instantly if the US someday starts expropiating these assets.

this is bullshit. wtf!!! america is number 1!!!

okay look maybe this is all one big misunderstanding. maybe we just need to re-invade all these countries and then they’ll come out on the other end poorer, with less rights and fewer possessions and privileges but will like us for it THIS time
