    maybe the author should clarify which is more accurately described as “the American way”:

    • tolerance for everyone
    • wanting to incarcerate everyone who isn’t a reactionary asshole

    or, maybe it’s the lib compromise:

    • tolerance, but only for the reactionary assholes who want to lock everyone else up
